PORTUGAL on Friday again declared a state of emergency in the country, following an increase in the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The matter was decided after the majority of lawmakers gave their support to the emergency proclamation.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said it would empower the government to impose stricter restrictions, such as curfews and closures.
"The coming weeks must involve our joint efforts to control the number of patients in the hospital, especially for those treated in the intensive care unit.
"This is so that we can avoid a worse situation in December, a situation that can lead to drastic and unwanted restrictions for all of us.
"November will be a test for us to control ourselves and calm down as well as the ability to survive in solidarity and perseverance," said Robelo de Sousa
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Antonio Costa will hold a Cabinet meeting on Saturday to discuss new rules that will be introduced next Monday.
Portugal recorded 5,500 new cases on Friday, bringing the cumulative number of cases in the country to over 166,000 since the outbreak of COVID-19.
