THE chief of police of the city of San Jose, Philippines died during a raid on a cockfighting gambling syndicate after one of the chickens was stabbed in the femoral artery.
According to local media, the horrific incident took place in the province of Northern Samar when the victim, Lieutenant Christian Bolok was lifting a cock to collect evidence at the scene.
Regional Police Chief Colonel Arnel Apud was reported to have said that the spear blade hit Bolok's left thigh and he suffered bleeding resulting in death.
"It was an unfortunate incident and I have no words to explain this bad luck.
"I could not believe it when I received the report on the incident.
"During my 25 years of service, this is the first time such an incident has occurred and I lost an officer due to a chicken pox," said Apud.
Three suspects were arrested while two cocks with two sets of spears were seized in a raid in the city of San Jose.
Cockfighting is a popular sport in the archipelago with money betting being used as a reward.
Following the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport along with several other sports and cultural events was banned.
It is to prevent people from gathering in one place and spreading the epidemic.
