BOGOTA: A senator in Brazil was urged to resign after police found cash hidden in his underwear while his house was searched.
The raid on Chico Rodrigues' residence was carried out by authorities on Thursday following allegations of misappropriation of 20 million reais of public funds to fight the coronavirus.
The Communications Ministry said in a statement that 30,000 reais were found inside the congressman's house while the rest of the money was found tucked into his underwear.
To illustrate how terrible the situation is, some of the money confiscated has been defiled," reported Revista CrusoƩ, a conservative magazine that broke the news.
Rodrigues said he would prove he was not involved in corruption.
"My house was invaded because I was on duty as a legislator, getting resources for the state to fight COVID-19.
"I believe in justice and I will prove that I have nothing to do with illegal actions."
Rodrigues represented the state of Roraima in the Senate and was elected deputy leader of President Jair Bolsonaro's administration.
Bolsonaro claimed the raid was evidence that he was successful in his fight against corruption without picking feathers.
