The lawsuits against British legendary rock band Led Zeppelin ended when the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a case alleging the group plagiarized the opening guitar riff (intro) of the popular song, Stairway to Heaven .
The rejection made a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeal in March 2020 in favor of Led Zeppelin upheld.
For six years, lead singer Led Zeppelin Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page have been accused of 'stealing' a riff from a song called Taurus, written by the late Randy Wolfe of the group Spirit.
Wolfe, known as Randy California, drowned in 1997, and the case was brought by his property trustee. This is one of the most overlooked copyright cases in the music industry, potentially causing millions of dollars in losses to Plant and Page.
Led Zeppelin was the opening group performance of the Spirit group before the group toured the United States in 1968, but Page testified at a 2016 jury trial in Los Angeles that he had never heard of a Taurus song until recently.
The jury found that the riff they were accused of stealing was not the same as the opening chord of the song "Stairway to Heaven."
Francis Malofiy, representing Wolfe's heirs, said that Led Zeppelin 'technically won' and said that the claim had achieved its original purpose filed.
"Today, the world knows that: 1) Randy California wrote the introduction (intro) of Stairway to Heaven; 2) Led Zeppelin is the greatest art thief of all time; and 3) The court is not perfect like a rock star," he was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Led Zeppelin has yet to comment on the case.
