AUCKLAND: New Zealand rangers and volunteers are trying to rescue about 25 whales stranded on a beach in the north of the country, the Conservation Department said on Saturday.
A total of 40 whales were seen swimming near the beach in the murky and shallow water in early Saturday before some of them were seen stranded on the beach, the department said in a statement on its Facebook account.
Ranger and on-site volunteers said they appreciated the public's concern, The Straits Times reported .
However, they stressed that for now they do not need help from outsiders and can control the situation.
The next tide is expected on Saturday night and could possibly make the whale safely back into the sea.
Volunteer representative Darren Grover told reporters that they were working to take care of the whale, making sure everyone remained healthy and would work to bring it back in the evening.
The whale, which can grow to more than six meters, is the same species where more than 376 birds died on a massive trip to Australia last month.
