COMPANY owner of the popular video sharing application TikTok, ByteDance has decided not to sell or transfer any data through any purchase negotiations with technology company Microsoft Corp.
The matter was announced by Microsoft Corp. in a statement uploaded on its official website on Sunday.
"ByteDance announced today that they will not sell the US TikTok operation to Microsoft.
"We are confident that this proposal is for the good of TikTok users, without neglectid the importance of national security.
To do this, we will make significant changes to ensure that the service meets the highest standards for security, privacy, online security, and the fight against misinformation, and we clearly explain these principles in our August statement.
"However, we look forward to seeing how these services grow in these key areas," Microsoft said in a statement.
Earlier, President Donald Trump announced that his government would ban the social media platform in the US on the grounds that it could threaten national security because of its ties with Beijing.
However, Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella contacted Trump last August to save the company's efforts to buy TikTok operations in the US and several other countries.
Negotiations for the purchase of the app, however, need to be completed by September 15 by the Trump administration.
However, citing a South China Morning Post report , sources said there was support in Beijing to exclude algorithms in TikTok sales.
This is because, clearly the source involved in the operation of ByteDance company, ByteDance can sell TikTok operations but not its algorithm.
Algorithm exclusions will also force potential buyers (including a Microsoft-led consortium) to reconsider purchase and evaluation plans.
"Theoretically, the US can copy the algorithm, but it takes time for users to get used to the algorithm being copied," the source said.
